Storm Damage

The recent storms have wreaked havoc in our area. Storm damage can be structurally devastating to your home and cause emotional distress to you and your family. Roof leaks and the telltale signs of water damage are often not immediately visible.

Storm damage can be extremely dangerous. Regardless of any damage to your home, the safety of your family is first and foremost. Whether your home has suffered storm damage or not, it’s important to know what to do (or what not to do) the next time a storm hits.

Inspect

Perform a visual inspection for any storm damage. Keep in mind that storm damage can cause structural damage, especially after things shift/settle. Pay attention to any loose shingles or roofing materials as they can fall off, trees can fall etc. Here are some things to look for:

  • Missing/Damaged Siding
  • Roof Leaks
  • Gutter Damage
  • Broken Windows
  • Standing Water (in basement and crawl spaces)
  • Missing/Damaged Shingles
  • Weakened Trees (that may fall on your home or property)
  • Downed Power Lines
  • Exposed Wires

Stay Safe

The following tips should help ensure that your home and family are safe the next time a storm hits:

  • Be very careful climbing ladders when inspecting for damage.
  • If your roof is damaged or leaking, cover the area to prevent further water damage.
  • If water has penetrated your home’s interior, remove all wet carpets/rugs. Then open all windows (when appropriate) and run fans (to prevent mold/mildew growth).
  • If your driveway is damaged, be wary of potential sinkholes.
  • Keep pets indoors and use a leash when taking them outside.
  • Don’t attempt to drive through flooded streets or bridges.
  • If you smell gas, turn off the meter and contact your provider immediately.
  • Check on neighbors, especially those who are elderly or disabled.
  • Stay away from damaged trees or broken limbs.
  • Steer clear of downed power lines.
  • Never use (or touch) a wet electrical device.
  • If the power goes out, use flashlights in lieu of candles to prevent fire hazards.
  • If the damage is severe, do not stay in your home - go somewhere safe until you know it’s safe to return.

Common Storm Damage Questions

To assess storm damage:

  • Visual Inspection: Start with a thorough visual inspection of your property. Look for missing shingles, broken windows, damaged siding, and any visible structural damage.
  • Roof Inspection: Check the roof for missing or damaged shingles, punctures, and leaks. If it’s safe, use a ladder for a closer look or hire a professional.
  • Interior Inspection: Inspect the interior for signs of water damage, such as stains on ceilings and walls, dampness, and mold growth. Check the basement and crawl spaces for flooding.
  • Check Utilities: Ensure that electrical systems, plumbing, and HVAC systems are functioning correctly. Look for downed power lines and gas leaks, and contact utility companies if there are issues.
  • Document Damage: Take detailed photographs and notes of all damage for insurance claims. Include both exterior and interior damage and any personal property that was affected.
