QUALIFIED REMODELER MASTER DESIGN
AWARD WINNING HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

For the past 44 years, Qualified Remodeler has received thousands of entries to its Master Design Awards from companies across the United States. In 2022, some of the best entries in the history of the program were submitted. Six judges reviewed each submission over the course of two days. Three winners were selected from each category as being worthy of a Master Design Award.

ABOUT THE MASTER DESIGN AWARD

Sponsored by Qualified Remodeler magazine, the Master Design Awards is the premier national contest recognizing outstanding achievement in residential remodeling projects.

Nominees are residential remodeling companies from across the country and thousands of entries are judged on aesthetic appeal, construction techniques used, handling of unusual situations, attention to detail, functionality of space and overall impression of the project.

Category: Exterior FaceliftLocation: Westchester County, New York

The exterior of this home in Westchester County was in much need of some major TLC. Looking for a long-awaited facelift, the objective was to transform the home from boring to beautiful. An impressive redesign did just that with the help of some serious upgrades. Every inch of the exterior consisted of thoughtfully designed updates that took the home’s previously lackluster exterior into one to behold.

In order to achieve this, we created a detailed strategic plan that enabled us to complete the project on time, within budget and with minimal disruptions to the customer. Because Honey Do Men is a full-service home remodeling company, we were able to coordinate every facet of the project with various contractors working collaboratively without impacting each other.

The Project’s Scope Entailed:

The home was a stunner waiting to happen. As you will see, the transformation almost makes the house look like a different home!

The Home Was Clearly Lacking In
Curb Appeal.

PHASE 1 : ROOF, CHIMNEY, SKYLIGHTS, GUTTERS, GUTTER GUARDS

The first order of business was to remove and replace the existing roof, install new skylights, gutters and gutter guards. The roof was crying for help.

We installed a new Lifetime 50-year manufacturer warrantied Architectural roof, skylights, Seamless gutters and Shurflo gutter guards which will require very little maintenance.

The chimney box was rebuilt with copper flashing.

PHASE 2: SIDING

Next up, we removed the old siding.

Then we installed new insulation foam board, Tyvek house wrap and sealed all windows and doors.

The color of the low maintenance new vinyl siding will contrast nicely with the white trim.

Not only does the new siding give the home a much needed pop of color, it almost makes the home look like a completely different house!

PHASE 3: DECK

For the back of the house, the homeowners were looking to create a more inviting outdoor living space for entertaining and relaxing.

The old deck wasn’t functional(or inviting).

The old deck was removed and we extended the new deck 6’ and raised it to within 3” of the existing finished floor of the house to create a seamless transition from the inside out.

The end result is both functional and beautiful. It is now large enough to host a group of friends and family.

PHASE 4: FRONT ENTRY

The goal was to improve the function of the home’s entry, which was poorly designed and trapped in the past. The walkway was crumbling and created a not-so-welcoming entry.

The end result is both functional and beautiful. It is now large enough to host a group of friends and family

We installed new stairs, bluestone treads, stone face risers, and bluestone for the porch landing and expanded the new walkway (accented with pavers) to carve a path from the driveway to usher guests to the new front entry.

We created a new portico over the front door to give this home much-needed dimension and personality.

Natural stone veneer now flanks the wide steps accented with stone to beef up the front door’s presence and create a warm welcome.

Lanterns flanking the new front door dramatically improve the entry’s function. As you can see, the end result was amazing.

PHASE 5: GARAGE

Replacing the generic and outdated garage doors was next on the list.

Once work started, we discovered that the garage door legs and framing were rotted and the existing header was undersized and sagging 1-1.5” from the weight above.

Despite these limitations, the garage is now not only safe, but the addition of carriage style doors and a few upgrades such as architectural enhancements and hardware add exquisite character to the home.

Intricate natural stone veneer now runs along the foundation wall to the front door and the sides of the house, creating symmetry and a stronger first impression.

PHASE 6: DRIVEWAY AND RETAINING WALL

The finishing touch to this exterior facelift was to create a brand new driveway. As you can see, the original driveway was very dated and less than appealing.

The existing driveway was torn out and regraded for proper pitch and water runoff.

A new retaining wall was created to match the natural stone veneer on the house and connect the walkway to the driveway.

Isn’t the masonry gorgeous?

Stone pavers now line the new driveway.

The award-winning transformation was remarkable, and the home now boasts curb appeal and is the showcase of the neighborhood!
